Description:
The P&O Liner SS ORIANA moored to buoys in the roads at Port Said, Egypt, awaiting the North bound convoy through the Suez Canal. She was on the U.K.-Australia-Pacific service sailing to a regular time table. Oriana was 41,923 gross tons and had a service speed of 27½ knots. She was built in 1960. Equiped with both stabilisers and lateral propulsion units fore and aft she was technologically advanced for the period. She could carry 688 1st class and 1,496 tourist class passengers. The photo was taken from the BP Tanker "British Aviator" in 1964.
