I have to fully agree with you Emmanuel,, it certainly is !,, a great spot from the height for shooting photos of ships that are entering into VLS premises.
Unfortunately I live 1 km to the West (right side), but also have quite a nice look onto the Rijeka container terminal from my apartment balcony.

I am praised with the compliment from my true friend & "my shipbuilding comrade" Emmanuel who spent many-many years with Malta Drydocks (MDD) ..... he certainly knows what a Shipyard means in the life of a person and how deep emotional traces it leaves.

Hi Jadran, and thank you for your welcome comments regarding the infamous 'Kraka'. Despite the costs involved, the changing plans for conversions and the delays to the varying projects, I find it quite amazing that she has been transformed into the expensive and successful 'Dan Swift'. For a while I was beginning to think she would end up being scrapped! My only criticism of the magistrala, as it winds past VLS, is that, when driving, there is nowhere convenient to stop and take photos!
I will, of course, let you know the next time I should pass down that road.

1) Yes indeed, that's the "famous" or let's say the "infamous" KRAKA that you have mentioned in your below comment. Moreover, your provided explanations about KRAKA are in good order & correct !
2) You have mentioned the "Ship Repair Journal"... well, I am a very good friend with Mr. Alan Thorpe the Editor of SRJ from Essex. Actually, I personally assisted Mr. Alan Thorpe during his visit to VLS for an interview about KRAKA Conversion Contract termination and thereas provided Alan with info & photos for his article on Kraka.
3) I'm glad that you recognized the old road called *Magistrala to Split* . The road is still there! I do hope you will soon again pass this road on your journey to the *South*.

Superb photo Jadran.
Very nice to see this view as I have drive down that road (the magistrala), on the right hand side many times. Behind the container ship, the vessel under conversion & painted all over with red lead (primer) would almost definitely be the "Kraka".
A ship with a chequered history. I expect you remember her well?!
Here is what I wrote in 2008 about her:-
It is the ex 'Mercandian Continent', now 'KRAKA'. (2013: Actually now the 'Dan Swift')
She was going to be converted to a cable laying ship by the Victor Lenac shipyard at Rijeka, Croatia but the contract fell through. She languished at the shipyard for a number of years and could be clearly seen from the road that runs past the yard.
Details from a World Bank document :-
In 2001 a large share of Victor Lenac yard activities went into a conversion of "Kraka" for Alcatel Submarine Networks. Approximately US$ 15.9 million worth of revenues was added during the year, but not recognized because Alcatel refused taking delivery. The matter is still under international arbitration and though management believes most of the amount is recoverable it is currently not possible to forecast how much''.
"In 2002, US$6.7 million worth of work performed by the yard on "Kraka" in the First Quarter of the year. This resulted in a reduction of available capacity to carry out regular repair work and thus impacted the revenues for the year significantly."
Quote from the "Ship repair Journal" Vol. 5 , NO.5 :-
Denmark’s Lauritzen Tankers, Copenhagen has awarded a conversion contract to Germany’s Blohm + Voss Repair, Hamburg for work on the former Danish rail ferry Kraka to turn her into a specialised offshore supply, repair and maintenance vessel, with a capability of accommodating some 250 maintenance crew for such operations in deep sea areas such as offshore Brazil, US Gulf and West Africa.
The Kraka was originally purchased by France’s Alcatel for conversion to a cable layer. The conversion contract was awarded to Croatia’s Viktor Lenac. The bottom then fell out of the cable laying market and Alcatel cancelled the contract, which left the ship in Croatia and the shipyard bankrupt. The ship was then sold by the yard to Lauritzen Tankers and towed to Trieste, Italy, where it has been laid up for the past two years. She was then towed to Hamburg where she arrived during September, the re-delivery scheduled for the third quarter next year (2008)."

The name of the bulkcarrier is: TROJAN (was managed by a USA shipping company)
The name of the blue ship in drydock is: STAR HARDANGER (IMO 9079119); managed by Westfal-Larsen; Norway

A little story about this photo:
The REQUEST for shooting of this photo had been done by me.
Mr. Rade Puhar is an excellent Photographer and a very good long-term friend of mine.
We together have also collaborated for many years in the past time.
Mr.Puhar today owns a Photo Art & TV studio in Rijeka.
He uses the service of a sport airplane from the local Aero Club for shooting the aerial photos.
He also, from time to time, provides me advise & instructions for my photos.

BTW the Name of Christina is written CHRISTINA O. (with the dot after the letter O).

That's right jimmcquarrie,, shipyard Viktor Lenac is well known as one of the leading shiprepair yards on the Mediterranean i.e. South Europe.
I was with Viktor Lenac for 35 continuous years !!
