After a bit more research I have identified the vsl I saw as Nahlin IMO 1009417 ex Libertatea. UK flag built 1930.
There is a photo on this site taken in Papeete by mattlb.

Thanks Peter,
Although similiar the Haida G is not the yacht I saw. The funnel colour is different and it does not have the gold "motif" at bow & sren as does Dannebrog. Unable to find either vsl on AIS so I guess it will remain a mystery.

I saw this yacht, or a very similar one, in Tahiti on 03 August 2013 although it was not flying the Danish flag. Are there other sister ships or has it been sold?
