I sailed on this ship from San Francisco to Yokohama as a passenger in the summer of 1963. We lost power for a few hours one afternoon in the mid-pacific when a generator blew up. We switched to the number two generator. Approaching Yokohama we encountered a storm, with winds of 80 mph an a serious port and starboard rolling. This brought the captain to the bridge, the first time we had seen him since passing the Golden Gate Bridge about 10 days earlier. He ordered a reduction in speed and a course adjustment, then returned to his quarters.
