Thanks for that info Irion29, I would not have noticed, so I am grateful.
Am I right to assume therefore, that the overhead 'gantry' system was for grain loading only?
Thanks again, regards,
Rick

The Boxcars in the lower RH corner offer a clue. Before the advent of purpose built hopper cars, 2 x 10 boards were nailed over the door openings from the inside(leaving enough room for a man to get out over the top board) and grain loaded in from the top.

..and looking closely at this remarkable image, there is a fair chunk of the ship's hull embedded into the wharf. Paul, can you tell me what the tall overhead 'warehouse in the sky' was used for? Were they fitted inside with conveyor belts to handle some kind of cargo, or maybe some other cago handling purpose?
Many thanks for this amazing image.
regards, Rick

Amazing twice in four years for a Norwegian owned ship.

First the brand new GOLDEN MASTER ran aground at Tauranga, NZ in 1959, and here the brand new GRANVILLE has smashed into the wharf.
