Description:
One of the world's oldest "active" vessels, seen moored at her berth at the Maritime Museum of San Diego.
She was originally built by Gibson, McDonald & Arnold in 1863 at Ramsey, Isle of Man as the iron-hulled, full-rig windjammer EUTERPE. In 59 years of active service as a freighter and salmon years, she sailed around the world 21 times, and many more miles throughout the Pacific. She was set aside for preservation in 1926, but was not restored until almost 100 years of age in 1963. Since, she has served as one of the premier attractions the city of San Diego has to offer, and maintains an active life by putting to see at least once a year. Unlike many museum vessels of her age, her hull, cabins and equipment are largely original.
Former name(s):
- Euterpe (Until 1906)
