I was AB on the Export Champion from Dec 1980 to Feb 1982 while the ship was under ownership of the Farrell Lines. We ran out of Brooklyn's pier 5 to West Africa with a stop in the Azores on the outbound leg of the voyage. The balcony Mr Brauwers notes was the winchmans platform and he is correct that the C class ships had no small cranes forward of the aft superstructure. The unlicensed crew and the Engine officers berthed aft and the deck officers midships. My discharges remind me that I made 4 coastwise and 5 deep sea trips in her. I was in my early 20s and had a wonderful time. She was a happy ship. My vote is the photo is of a C class ship.

Hi,
it's def. not "Export A" Class. They have the engine room & accomodation midships, "Export B & C" = Engine aft & Accomodation midship.

This is in no way EXPORT AMBASSADOR. As seen by the the photo of the vessel as AMBASSADOR, the design is not consistent with the later "Export B" and "Export C" vessel classes.

While the "Export B..." and "Export C..." classes are very similar, as Henning pointed out there is the issue of the "balcony" on the face of the forward superstructure, which is consistent with the latter. In addition, as far as I can tell, all of the "Export B" vessels retained the small cranes just forward of the aft superstructure into the container age, while the "Export C" vessels had them removed. Lastly, on a closer examination, the second word in the name does appear to start with a "C".
The four vessels of the latter class were Export Courier, Export Challenger, Export Champion and Export Commerce. Of those, Export Challenger only really fits the bill of the name length, the rest, and all "Export B" vessels falling short with the second word.

Jep, certainly one of the 1961/62 NASSCO-built C3-S-46a-Quartet named "Export Banner", "Export Bay", "Export Buyer" and "Export Builder"

One of American Export Lines' C3-S-46a class, built in the early 1960s, all of which had names beginning in "B". They included Export Bay, Export Buyer, Export Builder and Export Banner. There may also have been a few others.

With a little adjustment of contrast and brightness in Photoshop, I imagine the name will be (almost) readable at original size. As it is, I can see the second word is very long (possibly 10 characters) which fits with "Export Ambassador"

Hi,
I would more favour "Export Courier" . There is a little "balcony" on the forward accomodation on the portside. But on the "Export Banner / Bay and Buyer" it's fixed on the Stb-side. Pls have a look here : http://www.photoship.co.uk/JAlbum%20Ships/Old%20Ships%20E/index30.html

Please note that the A series such as Ambassador had the engine room end superstructure at mid-length. The engine- aft cargos had names beginning in B or C. All had steam turbines for propulsion.
