Export cargo from the Port of New Orleans, the Port of South Louisiana and the Port of Baton Rouge, La., which consists of 172 miles of river bank in the lower Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, La. export from 55-70% of the U.S. exports in corn, soybeans and wheat. Large amounts of petroleum products are handled at various locations and especially in the Gulf of Mexico. Over 6,000 salt water vessels call on this area each year. New Orleans is the leading import port in the U.S. for rubber, coffee, and steel, and also is important in importing fresh fruits and vegetables. Consult Wikipedia and the U.S.Department of Transportation for details.
