Description:

This was definitely the last ever photograph of the Windward II, ex Earl William. The photograph was taken just as she struck the starboard bow of the Drillship PetroSaudi Saturn. At this point, the Windward 11, had severed two of the eight mooring lines, of the Saturn. The fatal damage, which sank the Windward II, was believed to have been caused by the stern of the Windward II coming against the mooring wires. The damage to the Saturn, was caused by vessel drifting rapidly off her drilling location. The 200 ton BOP at the wellhead, ended up lying at an angle of 22.5 degrees. The wellhead was situated 480 feet, below the PetroSaudi Saturn. We had just finished drilling the 8008 foot deep well, for PDVSA. However, the collision resulted in the well having to be abandoned, at considerable cost. As well as the loss of the Windward II, considerable damage was incurred by the PetroSaudi Saturn. Losses amounted to $100 million. The photograph was taken from the starboard side of the petroSaudi Saturn, and shows the Stern of the Windward II, as she comes up against the bow of the drillship.
