facelift to bring her into the 21st Century.
Port Nelson’s veteran tug, the W H Parr (named for former Harbour Board Manager Bill Parr)
was built in 1972 by Sims Engineering in Dunedin. The engines on the WH Parr have been
problematical over the course of her life – they were designed as constant speed engines,
and when used at varying speeds there had been localised boiling leading to erosion
of the piston liners. A refit has been on the cards for a couple of years, but it took some
organization to decide on replacement parts and to get a fill-in replacement. Finally at the
beginning of November the Karetai arrived from Dunedin, the two 960 HP Deutz engines
arrived from Germany, the Rolls Royce Ulstein Aquamaster propulsion units were ready
and it was all systems go. The work was done by Nelson companies,
with the Nalder and Biddle Group winning the main contract and
Industrial Marine Electrical carrying out complete engine room and
bridge re-wiring. Initial work was done alongside at Kingsford Quay
and the vessel was slipped for 10 days on November 12th for the
propulsion units to be fitted and for a full blasting and repaint.
