A 210-foot freighter was sunk Wednesday afternoon in order to become the newest artificial reef off the coast of Miami-Dade County. Organizers scuttled the Ophelia Brian freighter, which was once a cargo ship named Sea Taxi, in the hope of helping the local marine habitat and the diving and fishing industries. Many SCUBA diving companies in the area base their outings around artificial reefs.
MIAMI: A 210-foot freighter was sunk Wednesday afternoon in order to become the newest artificial reef off the coast of Miami-Dade County. The 40-year-old German vessel used to carry cargo until it was seized in a drug bust, Local 10′s Jonathan Vigliotti reported. This year, Miami philanthropists Brian and Lavinia Snyder bought the ship for their daughter, Ophelia, and the ship was later donated to the county. At 1 p.m. Wednesday, surrounded by a fleet of onlookers, the ship made its way to the ocean floor.
