Description:

Sydney Harbour, passing Opera House. 12 November 2014
Vessel at 33°51'18.18" S 151°12'55.51" E

A group of young Pacific Islanders calling themselves the Climate Warriors have arrived in Australia to mount a protest against the Australian coal industry and call for action on climate change.

Countries that are part of the campaign include: Papua New Guinea, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tokelau, Niue, Cook Islands, Federated Sates of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Palau, Tuvalu, Nauru, Kiribati and Fiji.

Small island developing countries are among the most vulnerable to climate change.

Comment from Werner added:
All four voyaging canoes were built in Auckland at the Salthouse yard at Greenhithe. The vakas are based on a traditional Tahitian design but modern boatbuilding techniques are combined with established craftsmanship. The 13 tonne vessels are 22m long and have up to 16 crew.

Hi Clyde,

Please correct the name from GUAULOFA to GAUALOFA.

BTW, all four voyaging canoes in your photos were built in Auckland at the Salthouse yard at Greenhithe. The vakas are based on a traditional Tahitian design but modern boatbuilding techniques are combined with established craftsmanship. The 13 tonne vessels are 22m long and have up to 16 crew.

The GAUALOFA was gifted to the people of Samoa by Okeanos, a German based philanthropic organization. There are historical ties between Samoa and Germany.

Regards, Werner

Thank you very much Werner for your research and information. I have retained the prefix Climate Warrior to assist searching, and the reason for this voyage. The fleet and the individual names can be found using the Search "Anywhere" option
