A Fleet Oiler (Replenishment At Sea Tanker) converted from a T3 Tanker, USS Platte earned 11 Battle Stars for WW-II, 6 Battle Stars for Korea and 8 Battle Stars for Viet Nam. Ships such as this aren't glamorous, but the warships can't remain at sea without them. For that reason they are prime targets for enemy attack. Note the unusually heavy anti-aircraft armament, including the fire control director on top of the bridge.
