Description:

Photographed sailing from Avonmouth on 31st March 1965 bound for Rostock, MSTA had been built in 1945 for the U.S.S.R. by Wartsila at Helsingfors, Finland.

The second of thirty one timber carriers of the Khasan type built between 1945 and 1955, MSTA was operated by the Baltic Shipping Company of Leningrad until 1955 when she was passed to the Murmansk Shipping Company who modernised the ship.

Passing to the Latvian Shipping Company in 1969, it is reported that, before being hulked at Latvia in 1975 and broken up, MSTA had traded as ZUTIS between 1971 and 1973.

This photograph can also be seen in my book "Bristol Port and Channel Nostagia" published by Coastal Shipping

As BMP may be aware, a book has recently been published in Archangel concerning Morskoy Fleet - USSR - Reparations and Salvages. This photograph of MSTA helps to illustrate the book. best regards. Malcolm Cranfield

Of course, BMP. Unfortunately, despite requests ages ago, grosstonnage.com hasn't got rid of the substandard countries like Ussr, Uk etc.
At least it has the right ensign, unlike all the Uk ships.

She must have been rebuilt at some point because no way a 1945 freighter would have a bipod & that smoothed superstructure.
