In 1965 Azov Shipping Co was not existing. It was formed only on 21th of January 1967. From 1954 till that date company was part of Black Sea shipping co and had various names stating in general Azov regional division of Black Sea shipping Co. Until 1953 Azov shipping co was based in Rostov-on-Don.

The explosion was on 13/1/1999 from an explosive device placed below the waterline.
Looks as if this was an insurance scam as the vessel was found to be heavily over-valued ($1.8mn, rather than the true value of $100,000-150,000). Insurers successfully voided the policy.
