they stay close to oil rigs and load stations and when passing-by vessels are not staying away away as per regulations, then they call them and sometimes like trying to " force" them to change course away from the rigs etc. You would be surprised how often that happens !!! the regs are firm, I think the min passing distance is 500m,, but they would like to have 2 nm, therefore it is always a little conflict, special in the North sea where rigs are rather close together. Personally when I transit the North Sea then I take a route which keeps me away from hem anyhow. In the Gulf of Mexico there are socalled FAIRWAYS,,those are not mandatory but so cleverly laid out that in most cases it is the shortest route and therefore almost all using them.but thwere are some spots where ou pass in around 3-400 m some rigs
