HENRY G. DALTON - 15 April 1973 - Photographed while she was lying at the Dwor Metals scrapyard at Humberstone, Ontario, Canada alongside the remains of the former Erie Sand steamer ALPENA.. Photo by Al Sagon-King..
HENRY G. DALTON was built in 1916 at Lorain, Ohio for the Interlake Steamship Company of Cleveland, Ohio. Her age and a fire which gutted her aft accomodations at Buffalo during March of 1972 resulted in her retirement prior to the beginning of navigation that year. She arrived at Humberstone on 8 September 1972 and remained there through the winter of '72 - '73. She was towed down the Welland Canal in April 1973 and then on to Vado, Italy where she arrived on 16 June 1973. There she was cut up for scrap..
ALPENA was built in 1909 at Wyandotte, Michigan for the Wyandotte Transportation Company as the second purpose built 'self-unloader' on the Great Lakes. She was renamed SUDNEY E. SMITH Jr. (1) in 1968 and then ALPENA once again in 1971 after she was sold to the Erie Sand Company. She arrived at Humbersone, Ontario under tow on 6 September 1972 where she was subsequently cut up for scrap..
