Main engine: eight-cylinder, two-stroke DMR (Dieselmotorenwerk Rostock)-MAN K8Z 70/120E of 11,200 bhp at 140 rpm. Speed: 18.75 knots.
The ship was named after the First Secretary of the East German Socialist Unity (communist) Party from 1950 to 1971. In 1992-following the end of the communist era, the ship was renamed PRIOZERSK (in keeping with the ’P’ names of most of the other 15 “Mercators” in the Russian fleet).
