Description:

CAP ARCONA german liner spotted in the harbour of Hamburg, Germany around 1937 (photo: Ebner, fortepan N.: 83834).
Built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, Germany in 1927. BRT 27,561 tonnes. Length: 205.90 m. Engine power: 23,672 HP. Speed: 20 knots. She mainly served the route between Germany and South America. In WW II she carried troops and finally in 1945 she was used as a prison ship. She and two other ships were destroyed by British aircrafts off the coast of Neustadt in Holstein on 3rd May 1945 with prisoners, guards and crew on board causing one of the largest number of causalties in maritime history. She capsized and was drifted ashore later where the wreck was broken up in 1949.

Well,,the historians still are not clear about the numbers of lives lost,mainly because nobody counted how went on the vessel before departing, but surely one of the biggst ever,,if not the biggest.

This ship had a loss of 5000 people "only" so you are right.

I thought it was The Wilhelm Gustloff - Sunk by Soviet submarine S-13, there were at last 9,000 people on board ( some accounts claim more than 10,000) making it largest single loss of human in the sinking of on vessel in human history
