Seen passing Portishead inbound for Avonmouth exactly fifty years ago today, on 30th March 1966, was NEWGROVE of Tsavliris.
She had earlier called at Bandar Shapur on 21st January and subsequently sailed from Liverpool in ballast on 20th April bound for Bahia Manati in Cuba but ran aground on 14th May and was abandoned to the Government of Cuba.
Built at Portland, Maine, in 1942 as OCEAN LIBERTY, her subsequent career was as follows:
1948: AVISMOAT (Purvis Shipping Company)
1955: sold to Tsavliris and renamed CLAIRE T.
1958: renamed FREE TRADER
1959: renamed THEODOROS TSAVLIRIS
1964: renamed NEWGROVE
