Description:

255' OWASCO Class U.S. Coast Guard cutter MINNETONKA (WPG 67) seen at her moorings at Pier C Berth 23 Long Beach California circa 1960. Ship was commissioned 20 Sept 1946 and served on Ocean Weather Stations in the Pacific, fisheries law enforcement patrols to Alaska and one tour off the coast of Vietnam. Ship was decommissioned May 31, 1974.

Thanks for your comments. In the old days before all this security stuff you could wander the docks in the harbor at Long Beach and walk onboard almost any ship unchallenged. As a kid I used to do that. I took the picture around 1960 and it sat in a box of slides for about 45 years until someone scanned it for me last summer. 10 years after I took the picture I was assigned to the MINNETONKA as an assistant engineer and sailed in her from Nov 1970 through June 1972 ... and yes she had the more modern color scheme at that time.
