The Charterer paid to discharge the cargo into the Halifax grain silo, as his Insurer did not want it to cross the Atlantic in winter, in "Essco Spirit". Once this was done, Port State Control asked Halifax Shipyard to inspect the ship , and provide a cost estimate for repairing the hull "damage". The Estimator was a very experienced Scot, and when he was asked his opinion, he said "We'll no allow this ship to enter oor dock! When we pump the watter oot, the hull will collapse!"
