Rick, I believe this was an attempt to ride into harbour on Rothensee's back to save some fuel - that's why Rothensee was in a hurry to get away! :-)

My first thought was that MSC Chloe was 'hiding' behind the Rothensee to avoid paying some port dues (fees).... or something similar.
