Description:

BECKFORD (ex Motor Launch) Aground on Harwich Beach for maintenance 24th July 2006. No idea of her history or present owner.
Have never seen her move off her moorings at Shotley except for maintenance, certainely never seen her under sail! Anybody any ideas??

Thanks to Tony Holtham for the following info.
he is the former Ford Class Seward Defence Boat, HMS BECKFORD. She was launched in 27.4.55 as HMS BECKFORD. She was later renamed HMS DEE whilst serving as the training tender to the Mersy Division of the Royal Naval Reserve. In 1968 was chartered by the Plessey Group and renamed ROBERT CLIVE. Returned to the RNR in 1.69 and renamed DEE. Placed on the disposals list in 1982 and sold to Pounds Marine Shipping in 1984. Not sure how long she has been in Harwich but it has been a very long time.

I sailed several times on her when she was commissioning as HMS Dee and later during her RNR service. She was as Tony says a Seaward Defence Boat. I was a crew member during sea trials after a major refit in Plymouth and her following trip back to the Mersey. I also crewed her to a Fleet Review at Greenoch in 1965. I recall it being a very rough trip through the night up the Irish Sea to get there. Only happy memories (and some scary ones) of this vessel. Not the greatest warship every built but the one I had the most 'fun' being a crew member.
