Description:

R/V HERO was originally built in the style of downeast beam trawlers as a combination research and supply vessel to support Palmer Station on Anvers Island off the Antarctic Peninsula. She served in that role for the National Science Foundation until 1984 when she replaced by the R/V POLAR DUKE. Since she has flitted between various US ports with the original intention of being preserved.

Seen in decaying condition on the Palix River estuary at Bay Center, Washington on Willapa Bay.
