Description:

I took this while on the British Aviator watching her berth at Cobh in the Irish Republic. Later in her career Haustrum was attacked by rocket on the way up to Nha Be refinery at Saigon. The helmsman was killed and master and pilot injured. I believe she went aground on the mud but was taken off with no real damage to the hull. She resumed trading following repairs.

I note the comments about the Haustrum being attacked in VietNam. I was a navigating apprentice on her at the time. A chinese crewman was killed, he was helmsman at the time.
We were hit by 57 mm anti tank shells, the officers mess was hit, the bridge wing and chart room, the captains cabin, a shell went in to the port side tanks and one hit a lifeboat davit aft.
The blast from this last one pressed the emergency stop buttons for the engine room pumps which is why the engines stopped and we ran in to the bank. The Americans came along with a jet fighter to bomb the river bank and a landing craft lobbed hand grenades on to the bank as well.
The captain was injured, it was his last trip to sea having survived the war time Murmansk convoys without a scratch.
