08.07.1956:Delivered as Jadotville for Compagnie Maritime Belge (Lloyd Royal)SA (Agence Maritime Internationale SA, managers) Belgium. She was put on the Antwerp/Lobito and Matadi (Belgian Congo) service.
09.02.1961:Purchased by The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, together with her sister Baudouinville,to replace Carthage and Corfu - both pre-war - on the UK/Far East service.
20.02.1961:Transferred stores from Carthage in King George V Dock, London.
23.02.1961:Renamed Chitral.
Her name, from a town, river and region in north
Pakistan, was previously carried by a 15,248 grt P&
O passenger/ cargo liner built in 1925.
02.03.1961:First P&O sailing from London, route extended from Hong Kong to Japan.
12.1961:Collided with a junk in fog 3km (2 miles) outside Hong Kong.
12.1961: Air-conditioning fitted by Hall-Thermotank.
01.10.1966: Managers renamed P&O Lines Management Ltd. Operators renamed P&O Lines Ltd.
04.1967: Arrived in London with the first containerised cargo of Japanese salmon.
31.12.1969: Last P&O passenger sailing from Hong Kong. After the closure of the Suez Canal, which meant that the voyage to Hong Kong took 35 days instead of 25, P&O revised its Far East routes and the two ex-Belgian sisters were no longer required.
