Description:

With London City Airport and the former Royal Docks in the background, these two Adsteam tugs proceed to the Thames Refinery to assist the outbound bulker "Christy M." The tugs are going astern which they customarily do when running "light" on the Thames. Evidently this is in order to reduce bow wash. Photograph taken on 23/08/2006.

Thanks, Jeff. It may not be obvious from the photo, but the tugs are moving astern which I've noticed these Adsteam tugs always seem to do when transiting up and down the Thames. Maybe someone can satisfy my curiosity and tell me why.

Kind regards

Barry
