The Shanghai Marine Safety Agency data confirms this as 7234600. Gross and net tonnages are exact. The owner is listed as Hainan Tongli Shipping Co.

By comparing the pic's of the last 4 suggestions only "Gretke Oldendorff" seems to fit. The 3 larger windows on the front below the navigation bridge, all other candidates have different windows

According to Hennings information I found in my records four vessels who were scrapped after 2006 when Michael made this photo. Here we go:

1972 ILSE SCHULTE (AQUITANIA-JIN JIANG) 2011 stricken
1973 BOLESLAW PRUS BI SHENG-WAN RU-JIN CHENG SHAN) 2011 stricken
1973 GRETKE OLDENDORFF (LARK-SOLAR GLORY) 2012 stricken
1977 YONG XING (PU CHENG) 2009 China

All other vessel have been scrapped earlier or have different accomodation. Hope this will help a bit...

Regards,
Holger

Exactly , the cargo gear between hatch 4/5 consisted of a heavylift derrick. As can be seen on this one: IMO 7333808
They left the stumps and some winches for being able to open the hatches. Wire operated McGregor type. You can see still the black blocks attached to the stumps

Aren't they larger because they are adapted from the thicker tubular bases of the of the goalpost supporting the heavy derrick, compared with the others. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

The exhausters/vents forward of hatch five look slightly larger than the other pairs. Maybe the original ones were replaced?

LUISE BORNHOFEN was scrapped in 2001 at Chittagong according to my records.
JING JIANG had double exhausters as well as BOLESLAW PRUS. Would they have reduced the amount from four to two during a conversion?

ILSE SCHULTE had no exhausters on the winch house.
HILDESHEIM had flanged accommodation as well as her sisters built in Bremen by AG Weser.

I think that Phil is right with his opinion that the ship has been withdrawn from international class and at that point likely deleted from registers. And I fear that we will get no satisfying information.

I think BOLESLAW PRUS IMO 7333808 > BI SHENG > WAN RU > JIN CHENG SHAN is a good bet.

Look at the red lead on the lower accomodation block. Rust getting worse after another three years, despite being repainted?

As far as I can find, the only Chinese 36-L not to be given a scrapping date by Miramar was 7360976 CHANG XING which noted only as being deleted and existence in doubt.

Ex Luise Bornhofen broken up in Chittagong 2001 and Xiang Jiang this is not certain.

According to stumps along the masts, it could be one of the following 36L ships, which could be in operation:
Jin Jiang ? built as Ilse Schulte
Qian Shan built as Charlotte Kogel del.2005
Wan Ru built as Boleslaw Prus
Huang Hua built as Hildesheim del.2012
36L type ships had several versions of masts and cranes...

There were several 36L types under Chinese flag which traded internationally for many years. It's likely that this is one of those, but sold within China, renamed, downgraded and converted for the domestic coal trade in the 1990s. The ship would have been withdrawn from international class and at that point likely deleted from registers. As such, the name HUA SHENG HAI has never been recorded.

Maybe someone with good knowledge of this class operating in China can put a few jigsaw peices together to work out which one it is!

Indeed, but I couldn't find a vessel with this name in my records. But it can be possible that the former loading gear consisted of cranes. For this variation I found some vessels which were scrapped after 2006 when Michael made the photo. But these vessels had four exhausters between hatch no. 4 and no. 5. This vessel has only two...

Judging by the "remainings" of the cargo gear :-) it's a variant of the 36L similiar to Luise Bornhofen IMO 7510913

Hello Holger, I wondered already that this vessel seemed a bit familiar to me. Thanks for the info.
Kind regards Michael

Hi Michael,

definitely an old freigther type 36/36L with removed loading gear. Most vessels of this type were built here in Bremerhaven at AG Weser Werk Seebeck.

Holger
