The cruise ship 'MS Albatros', also commonly referred to as 'the White Lady', manoeuvering to depart from the Lisbon Santa Apolónia passenger terminal.
Interesting to watch, and worth mentioning, the textbook manoeuver carried out by the Captain at the port side knock. Due to the presence of heavy currents flowing downstream due to tide change from high to low tide, and that were present along the Tagus river banks at time of departure, the ship, a mere 205m long, was brought backwards for half a mile at low speed close to, and almost parallel, to the embankment, until the point where the coast bended, leaving more room for the ship to turn, and away from obstacles. When in deeper waters, she was then turned, still backwards, describing a 120 degrees arc to starboard, and bringing her into the middle of the river, and perpendicular to the river bank. At that point, she was stopped, and started to move forward, describing another 120 degree arc, this time to port side. She then proceeded forward the normal way, heading for the port entrance. In all, the vessel must have been brought bakwards for almost a mile. This manoeuver was possible because no other passenger ships where moored at the Santa Apolónia passenger terminal at time of departure, and did not benefit from the assistance of any port tugs. The photo was captured at the exact moment the ship stopped the backward movement, and resumed sailing forward.
The vessel 'Albatros', a classic, under the command of Captain Morten Hansen, is one of the prime stars of the TV series 'Verrückt nach Meer' ('Crazy about the sea') shown on German TV, and depicting life onboard since the Autumn of 2010.
