Description:

FINKENWERDER at the von Cölln shipyard at Hamburg-Finkenwerder, seen from Tankweg, Hamburg, 10.02.2019

On Saturday morning, February 9, 2019, while being berthed at the Blankenese ferry station, Finkenwerder was rammed by mega-boxer Ever Given (IMO 9811000) departing for Rotterdam.

Police assumes that strong wind during Ever Given's departure caused the collision. Finkenwerder and the ferry station pontoon were both heavily damaged.

A crew of three who were the only people aboard the ferry when the collision happened was extremely shocked but not harmed physically.

Her starboard side is damaged worse than her portside. The collision happened on portside, though. I don't dare to think what could have happened if it had been a sunny summer's day and the ferry had been packed with passengers...

I have no idea of ship repairs, but my guess is that she needs a whole new superstructure. If so, I wonder if that would be economical for a 30 year old ship...

Thanks for your comment Henk!
