Description:
Built as Prince Robert for CNR. In October 1946 bought by the Charlton Steam Shipping Co, refitted as emigrant carrier with austere accommodation for 750 persons, renamed Charlton Sovereign, chartered by the International Refugee Organisation in March 1948. Arrived in Sydney Harbour on 29 October, after a voyage from Bremerhaven with 725 IRO refugees lasting 86 days, including four weeks in Gibraltar for boiler repairs and 10 days in Batavia with engine trouble. Stayed two weeks in Sydney for engine repairs, shown here departing on 15 November for Europe. Unknown photographer - picture in my collection
