Description:

Shell Tankers (U.K.) Ltd's 1950 Wallsend built tanker VELUTINA is seen passing Hoek van Holland inbound for Rotterdam on 13th June 1970.

On 19 April 1971 VELUTINA sailed from Puerto Miranda, on the east side of Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela opposite the city of Maracaibo, bound for Liverpool (Tranmere) and soon thereafter arrived at Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht in the western Netherlands for breaking. Unusually, on 26th May 1971, she berthed alongside Liverpool's pier head passenger terminal to prepare for the voyage to the breakers. Her forepart was for a time used as a hulk.
