Description:

Passenger/cargo ship “Mangyongbong” (or “Man Gyong Bong”) at Kobe, Japan, November 1972
Owner: Democratic People's Republic of Korea
Flag: North Korean
Builder: Chongjin Shipyard, Huichong
Gross tons: about 5,000
Deadweight: about 1,700
Length overall: about 100 m
Engine: diesel
Completed 1971
In 2011 there were several media reports of a North Korean “cruise ship, former cargo ship” having its maiden voyage in September of that year and a photo on the Daily Mail’s website shows this ship as having a striking resembance to the 1971-built “Mangyongbong”. Fleetmon.com also ran an article in 2017 showing photos of this same ship, giving her year of built as 1971 and quoting the above IMO number.
This ship should not be confused, as some sites do, with the “Mangyongbong-92” that was built in 1992.
