Look here: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/C.R.C.,_c._1436/FullText.html
if search in there by "85 m" there will be many results for ships over & under 85 m in length. Class IX ships #83 especially.

Could be that they went for a vertical bow to increase the distance between forward perpendicular & hold's front bulkhead, allowing for a more boxy hold than having too much of narrowing in it's front. That made her waterline length on 1.63m over the 85m rule however, but there was enough of free space on aft for a lifeboat anyway.

With the bluff bow (and maybe also the shape of the stern) this ship had unusually small lbp/loa difference. See this view:
http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2985795

My suspicion that the designers' main concern was to maximise dwt within the favourable German 999grt rules. I wonder when the 85m lifeboat rule was introduced?

Thanks! Strange that there are cargo vessels with LOA up to some 94m yet they're still within 85m LBP & carry no lifeboat, but it wasn't possible for this ship for some reason.

Class (Indian Register of Shipping since 2017 - I didn't realise that that is now an IACS class) has:
loa 87.99m, lbp 86.63m

Manfred, she was already 2561 GRT in 1985 when I first photographed her.

@Denis:
Her loa is 87,99m, lpp is 86,60m.
@Krispen:
In July 1994 the BRT (GT/GRT) was changed to BRZ (German short form), PAULA was before 999, after 2,561.

Mike - Looks like the work was done in 1995 (GL recorded some tonnage changes around then for her). She definitely had it in mid-1996.

Does her length between perpendiculars really exceeds 85m that she must carry a lifeboat?

I caught her in June 1999 with the modified superstructure.

Does anybody know when and where she received the taller superstructure and wheelhouse? - it was sometime before 2005
