Description:

*Photinia* B187933. Launched 17 November 1960 at South Shields by J. Readhead & Sons Ltd. as hull no. 607 for Stag Line Ltd., North Shields. 479'8" x 60'3" x 25'6.5;" 7671 gt, 3946 nt; one 4-cylinder Doxford Diesel, 670mm x 2320mm, 4400-bhp, built by North East Marine Engineering CoLtd.

Chartered to British Insulated Callenders (Submarine) Cables Ltd. and converted to a cable-laying vessel to lay power cables across the Cook Strait, New Zealand, 1976-1978.

Grounded 14 May 1978 off Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, while anchored during a storm. Declared a total constructive lost, raised and towed to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, for removal of her engine, then towed to Lake Calumet, Chicago. Towed to Kewaunee, Wisconsin, 1979, and broken up, 1979-1983.

Brings back some memories - I was on her from30/6/70 to 23/9/70 and again 25/8/72 to 9/12/72 as 3rd mate.
