M/s KOPERNIK was ordered for Żegluga Polska as JULIAN MARCHLEWSKI . (Keel laid 28-04-1949 ) ... In march 1950
the name chenged to GDANSK ; Launched 01-05-1950 as ŁÓDŹ . Finally completed as "KOPERNIK".

Good question Pieter, but I suspect not. I hope that a Polish expert will be able to clarify. This ship was the second of the B50 type. The first, NOWA HUTA, was launched as WARSZAWA and entered service as such in October 1952. KOPERNIK was delivered in July 1953 while the third seems to have been cancelled. The fourth and fifth, GDYNIA and SZCZECIN, were completed at Aarhus, entering service in July 1953 and November 1953 respectively. (Information from Miramar)
