Description:

PANAGIOTIS XILAS is seen westbound in the Bosphorus on 3rd September 1977.

Built at Kiel in 1958 as DIAMANTIS PATERAS and was renamed ISAPOSTOLOI in 1972 shortly before her sale in 1973 to George, John and Marcos Xilas of Piraeus, trading as Mediterranean Shipping Enterprises, who renamed her PANAGIOTIS XILAS.

Laid up at Eleusis from 30th July 1981, she was renamed CANOPUS for her last voyage to breakers at Alang where she arrived on 26th October 1984

Ged, please be aware that, in common with many Greek families, different branches of the Xilas family have/had different funnel colours. There was no question of any inter-Greek charter.

Hello Malcolm.irene xilas and maria xilas owned by the xilas brothers are also on this site one of then is your photo. they carry the funnel colours of xilas this ship carrys some other funnel colours .looks more like coulouthros charter maybe .

It was always nice to sail through the English channel and feel close to home, but I always found passing through the Bosphorus in the 1960s a wonderful experience.
