Ordered 1949 by Holland Amerika Lijn in Wilton-Fijenord Dok an Werf Maatschappij , Schiedam as general cargo/ passenger ship , based on american WW II project C3 . Planed name DIMERDIJK .
Finally launched as passenger - MAASDAM .
Maiden voyage commenced 11-08-1952 ( Rotterdam , Montreal , New York ).
April 1968 : Sold to Polish Ocean Lines Gdynia as replacement for m/s BATORY ( built Monfalcone 1935).
Took over by Polish crew arrived Gdynia 11-10-1968.
Renamed ( from Maasdam ) STEFAN BATORY , rebuilt by Gdanska Stocznia Remontowa ( Remontowa Gdansk) .
First transatlantic voyage under Polish flag commenced 11-04-1969 - her destinatin port was Montreal .The firs commander : Master Mariner Jerzy Pszenny . In 1969 commenced final part of conversion , completed 07-04-1970 .
After VOY 140 ( 140 W + 140 E ) - 1987 she was WITHDRAWN from the regular line service.
For very short period Stefan Batory served as a cruise ship . Sold (1988) to Greek Owners , awaiting
decision of about her future in Vlaardingen , later on at Piraeus anchorage. Chartered ( - Dec.1989) by Stena Line , renamed STEFAN . Berthed ( anchored ? ) ii Gothenburg , served as hotel ship for immigrants - until 1991. Towed from Sweden to Piraeus ( 08-1991) . Planed conversion to cuise ship . Finally the vessel was abandoned close to Eleusis until March 2000. Towed to ALIAGA and scraped.
