Description:
This is a rare photograph of the 1939 built GLENGARRY in the few months at the end of her career, in 1970/1, when she was transferred within the Ocean Group from Glen Line to Blue Funnel Line, being renamed DARDANUS.
Built by Burmeister & Wain at Copenhagen, and launched on 6th November 1939 as GLENGARRY, she became, as MEERSBURG, a unit of the German Navy until 1945, when she was returned to British control as EMPIRE HUMBER, and then to Glen Line in 1946.
She reverted to her original name of GLENGARRY for her delivery voyage to breakers at Tadotsu, where she arrived on 1.3.71
The photograph was taken at Avonmouth on 10th October 1970, where she was berthed at "X" berth. I was standing close to the stern of the Liberty Ship SIDERIS (photograph already published on this website).
