Goumas Shipping Co. of Athens' 1985 Shimonoseki built bulk carrier ALASKA RAINBOW is seen berthed on Vittoria Wharf, Birkenhead, early on 7th February 2007 with a full moon clearly visible above her superstructure.

At 11.38 on 3 February 2007, the Isle of Man high speed ferry SEA EXPRESS 1 (IMO 8900012) collided with ALASKA RAINBOW in the Mersey in a thick fog which had prevented her from docking into Birkenhead as planned. The collision holed the starboard hull of the ferry, causing a list and water to flood the engine room.
