Description:

20/07/1975, somewhere off East Africa.

I served on this ship from 02/07/1975 to 06/10/1975.

Completed in October 1969 by Kawasaki heavy Industries, Sakaide, Japan (1105)
105,138 g.t. and 209,805 dwt., as:
'Melo' to 1976,
'World Recovery' to 1976, and
'Selefkia' until sold to Taiwan for demolition.
Arrived at Kaohsiung on 20/05/1980, work commenced on 03/06/1980.

An early example of a VLCC. Shell had a number of this 'M' Class built, with a carrying capacity of >200, 000 tons.

Powered by a very thirsty steam turbine (actually, the boiler was the thirsty part), and producing about 25,000 hp which required over 200 tons of fuel per day..

The ship paid for herself many times over, but economically, the steam turbines, together with the second, major, world oil crisis of 1979, a result of the Iranian Revolution (1978–79) saw her demise.

Shell sold her in 1976, as their second, much larger 'L' Class were being introduced.
The subsequent Greek owners could not make her a viable proposition, and she was scrapped in 1980, when less than eleven years old.
