Depends on personnel. Some would shift every watch, others when they noticed excess rust. One thing to mention is the they needed re-positioning after having gone astern, which would throw them off the shaft if non variable pitch prop.

Thanks for the advice, John. Wondering how often during voyages this mat shift position ? Just curious.

Cleaning and oiling of tail shaft, stops corrosion. The position of the coir mat is moved periodically to clean other areas.

Wonder what's the purpose of that "blanket" tied with rope over the shaft ?
