Description:
On Sunday 18th July 1971, exactly fifty years ago today, two Elder Dempster Lines' sister ships - OBUASI and OWERRI - arrived at Avonmouth from West Africa on the same tide.
This photograph of OBUASI was taken from the north pier as she approached Avonmouth and was shortly to swing to port to stem the incoming tide.
Built in 1952 by Harland & Wolff at Belfast, OBUASI was sold at Tilbury in May 1972 to Anglo-Pacific S.A., a subsidiary of Anglo-Eastern Shipping Co of Hong Kong, placed under the Somalia flag and renamed AMOY. She was destined to survive for only a little over one year after this photograph was taken.
AMOY ran aground on 9th August 1972 off Burma and became a total loss.
