Description:

The lightship Sevenstones marks the Sevenstones Rocks, a dangerous reef off the Isles Of Scilly.
Sevenstones was manned originally by a crew of ten keepers, with five on station at a time. She has been unmanned since 1987. The accommodation and storage was taken out and replaced with foam so that she would stay afloat in the event of a collision. On several occasions she has broken free of her moorings, so is now secured by 550m of heavy chain to a 4t anchor.
The lamp flashes white 3 times every 30 seconds, and is visible for 40km. The fog signal sounds 3 blasts every 60 seconds.

Sorry MattB, I tried to find some answers to your questions but to no avail (I tried mostly the Trinity House site).

My Father worked on HMS Galatea in Scotts Greenock Sunk by German submarine U-557, off Alexandria on 14 December 1941

Great photo, interesting to look at. GALATEA was off Milford Haven yesterday. Was hoping she was going to put in an impromptu visit but it came to nothing. Have these lightships ever sunk while on station? And what happened to the guys who used to man them? Were they pensioned off? Were there ever any women who manned these lightships? So many questions.... you can take me out into a field and shoot me !
