Description:

The remains of the former HMCS CAPE BRETON ARE-100 were photographed on August 8, 2003 on the former property of Burrard Dry Dock in North Vancouver BC where she was built in 1944 as the HMS FAMBOROUGH HEAD. The ship had intended to be used by the British Pacific Fleet and was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1945 remaining in service until 1952. Purchased by the Royal Canadian Navy and commissioned in January 1953, she served in Halifax, NS until 1959 before moving to Esquimalt for employment as an Escort Maintenance Ship. Decommissioned into reserve in February 1964, she later served as an accommodation ship and support facility for The Fleet Maintenance Group (Pacific). In 1993 the ship was sold to the Artificial Reef Society of BC. The ship was sunk on October 20, 2001 off Snake Island near Nanaimo BC. Prior to the sinking, 30 feet of the stern was removed along with the triple expansion engine to be displayed in a museum to be built on the property. The engine is under the grey cover on the port side. The split in the rudder is reportedly to counteract the torque of the single propeller.
