WELCOME TO SHIPSPOTTING.COM
Description:
Barge H331 with the old iron bridge across the river Lek, moored near the Princess-Beatrix-locks at Nieuwegein, Netherlands, surrounded by several smaller barges, used for demolition of the bridge.
After removal on the 7th November failed (see: http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=3358967 ), the heavy lift company Mammoet tried again on the 21th, after two hours delay now with success.
The first attempt on the 7th failed because one of the mooring cables was damaged under water. After dredged a large support beam was found: it was never recovered after the bombardment in January 1945 by allied planes. By that air attack the bridge collapsed in the river and was later salvaged and reconstructed.
The old iron bridge, constructed in 1934-1936, was in 1994 replaced by a modern bridge with five lanes, an entry/ exit lane and a footpath/cycling-lane in each direction.
It will be scrapped on the barge H331 and all sections will be transported on barges to Schiedam for recycling.
