Description:

Originally ordered for the account of Nereus Shipping, and completed in 1976 as HOMERIC, ESSO took over this ship in 1977, and renamed her ESSO MEDITERRANEAN. With 457000 DWT she became the third largest tanker ever to wear the Esso colors.
She was built by the IHI Kure yard as yard number 2405, equal in size to the Goulandris ordered ANDROS PETROS, which was also delivered in 1976 and joined the Esso fleet in 1977 as the ESSO CARIBBEAN.
Esso said goodbye to the ship in 1991, when she was taken over by Ceres Shipping, and renamed Kapetan Panagiotis. Where she ever operated on a profitable basis is unknown, but the torch came in march 2002 when she beached at Gadani. Her LWT of 66000 resulted in a gross income for Ceres of almost 9.5 mln dollar.

Shown here at berth 3 in the Fifth Petroleum Dock, Europoort, mid eighties.

Thanks Acrop, for the additional info on Ceres. It must not have been a money making deal in the end.

Very nice and historical photo.
For the record, late G P Livanos bought all 4 ULCCs from Esson in 1990, en bloc at about 250m reportedly, if i recall well. They were the Pacific, Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean. In 1993 he bought 2 other ULCCs from Chevron, namely the Chevron North America and the David Packard.
They all traded in the spot market, PG to USG or Ain Shukna, and except for short spells in 1992 and in 2000 where tanker marker for larhe ships boomed, they suffered a lot with prolonged stays at Khor Fakkan, waiting for cargoes.
They were manned with about 40, Greek Officers and petty officers and Filippino crew.
