Description:
One of the three “K’ sisters – a collection from the same source.
KRK, 3587 grt, was built at the Kockums Mekaniska Verkstad A-B, Malmö (hull no: 270) as ADA GORTHON for Rederi A-B Gylfe, Helsingborg. In 1961 she was sold to the then Kvarnerska Plovidba and then in 1963 in the “re-engineering” exercise (yes re-engineering was alive and well even then!) she was transferred to the Jugoslavenska Linijska Plovidba (Jugolinija), Rijeka. Old hands who sailed on these three “K” sisters insist that these were the best ships of its class that Jugolinija ever had in terms of sheer reliability and economy. At a very respectable age of 27 she went, as did her sisters, to the breakers at Sveti Kajo, Split in 1972.

An interesting little side-story about Krk. Krk was my brother’s (Luka Kivela) first voyage as a young seaman. On its way from Rijeka in the vicinity of islands Hvar and Vis, (Luka was born on Vis) the morning watch found that Krk’s master passed away peacefully in his sleep. Of course, Krk turned back but the sad occasion had left a permanent impression on young Luka – the passing away of his first-ever master.
