Description:
Blue Star Line’s 1950 Cammell Laird, Birkenhead, built TASMANIA STAR berthed in London's Royal Docks on about 4th July 1970, photographed by C.C.Beazley.
TASMANIA STAR had sailed from Port Pirie on 14th April 1970 bound for London (arrived 25th June) and Liverpool.
One of many elegant ships built for Blue Star Line after the War, it was perhaps surprising, after the creation of Associated Container Transportation (ACT) in 1967, that TASMANIA STAR continued to trade until as late as 1975, arriving at Kaohsiung breakers on 20th September that year direct from Avonmouth where she had been laid up from 22nd June to 8th August.
Viewers might be interested to know that I have very recently written a book on Blue Star Line/Vestey Group which is available on line from today (see link below) and will subsequently be available for purchase in main outlets of W.H.Smith. This photograph of TASMANIA STAR, scanned from a slide in my collection, is not reproduced in the book.
